Driving blind
I went out camping this week. That in itself is a small miracle. I used to be unable to be that close to so many people, as I would instantly pick up on everyone’s thoughts and emotions. Even though walls do nothing to stop me from "hearing" everyone, it seems to help my mind believing that "it’s not so bad".
Anyhoo, I went to this fantastic camp ground. I’m not telling you which because it’s already packed in the summer and the last thing I need is all of you making it worst by rushing over there after I tell you how fabulous it is :)
As I always do when I go someplace new (well, that’s not true, I do this even for places I’ve been to before…), I put the address in my GPS and I hum a little tune while it calculates the perfect route. I trust that little machine so much that I never look at the path itself. I just turn when it tells me to.
Well, this time, the GPS and I had an interesting conversation. It went like this:
GPS: Take exit 292
Me: Huh? We’re no where near the campground yet! Weird…(I do it anyway)
GPS:Take a left on Main street
Me: Where the heck are we?
GPS: Take a right on First, and then a left of Broadway
Me: Are you sure about this?
GPS: Take a left on "Forestry Road"
Me: No way! This is an old logging road! You’re getting me lost!
GPS: Lost satellite reception
Me: SEE! I told you! Now we’re lost!
GPS: Acquired satellite reception. Turn left in 15 miles.
Me: What? Not only are you getting me lost but you’re making sure I am no where near civilization too?
GPS (15 miles later): Turn left, arriving at destination.
And you know what, the GPS was right. I was at my destination, having saved a good 30 minutes by taking this back way. And that’s when I felt a good analogy coming…
Intuition works like a GPS. You tell it where you want to go and it takes you there. But sometimes you have to be willing to drive blind in order to use the fastest route to your destination (i.e. what you want). I was truly convinced this was the wrong way, as we often are when we follow our intuition on our way to new places. Self doubt. Second guessing. Other people’s opinions. It creeps in on us.
And yet, if we dare to keep going down the intuitive route we always find ourselves happy that we did. I love teaching about intuition because it’s the most empowering concept I have ever come across in my life.
